Commercial mechanical marketing in Quebec

Quebec has its own construction licensing and labour framework, and most buyers work in French. Marketing there starts with French-first documents and pages, not translations added later.

Quebec is the province where a copy-and-paste approach to marketing fails fastest. Most GCs, owners and facility managers work in French, construction runs under a licensing and labour framework of its own, and the GC networks in Montréal, Québec City, Laval, Gatineau, Longueuil and Sherbrooke are well established. A mechanical contractor's marketing has to be built for Quebec from the start.

The Quebec buyer mix

The direct answer: French-speaking GCs and construction managers, a large institutional sector, commercial property managers in the major cities, and industrial owners across the province.

Montréal and Laval form the largest market, with long-standing relationships between GCs and mechanical subs. Québec City has a strong public and institutional base. Gatineau sits across the river from Ottawa, so some firms there work on both sides of the provincial border and need materials that suit both. Regional centres such as Sherbrooke often have tighter networks where a firm's name precedes it.

Language, documents and pages

The most common mistake we see is a well-designed English package with a French version produced at the last minute. Estimators notice awkward technical French immediately. Plan for:

  • a French-first website, with English as the second language if you work outside Quebec
  • a prequal package and capability statement written in French, reviewed by someone who knows mechanical terms
  • project pages that use the vocabulary Quebec reviewers use for systems and building types
  • outreach templates in French, sent within CASL consent rules

Language obligations for businesses are a legal question. We plan the marketing; your advisers confirm what's required.

Cold winters and the calendar

Winters are cold and snowy across Quebec, and the heating season runs long, longest of all beyond the St. Lawrence lowlands. Service demand peaks through the cold months, and building activity follows a strong seasonal rhythm. Time PM agreement campaigns for late summer, and bid-list outreach for the planning season ahead of each building year.

Quebec mechanical firms are expected to reference their province's bodies. Link them, and read them directly:

We don't summarise or interpret their rules. If your marketing mentions a licence or certification, quote it exactly as issued.

Programs and tax

The Quebec energy programs we track as of October 2026 are residential. We haven't verified any that change how ICI mechanical work is tendered, so we don't build commercial plans around them.

Plans are billed in Canadian dollars plus 5% GST and 9.975% QST, based on the CRA's published rates.

Gatineau and the Ottawa border

Firms in the Outaouais often work on both sides of the Ottawa River, which means two provincial systems, two sets of bodies and, frequently, two languages in the same week. If that's you, keep two versions of your core documents rather than one hybrid, and make sure each project page states which province the work was in. Reviewers on each side will look for experience under their own system first.

The same logic applies in reverse to Ontario firms eyeing Quebec work: present Quebec projects separately, in French, and don't assume your Ontario package will carry over.

How we'd market a Quebec mechanical firm

  1. French-first assets. Website, prequal package and project sheets written in French from day one.
  2. City-by-city contact maps. Montréal and Laval, Québec City, and any regional market you serve, in the relationship program.
  3. Institutional proof. Clear project pages for health, education and public buildings.
  4. Licence details shown exactly. Display what you hold as issued, without paraphrase.
  5. Service agreements for winter. Property managers in the major cities renew providers at fixed dates; be ready before they do.

We're a marketing and consulting service, not a contractor, and we don't give legal or licensing advice. Call, text or email to start, or go back to all regions.

Frequently asked questions

Do our materials need to be in French?

For most Quebec buyers, yes in practice: estimators, owners and facility managers expect French. Language requirements for businesses are a legal matter, so confirm yours with a qualified adviser.

Can an out-of-province mechanical firm market in Quebec?

It can market, but working there involves Quebec's own licensing and construction-labour framework. Read the RBQ and CCQ pages and get local advice before you pursue work.

What sales tax applies to your plans in Quebec?

5% GST plus 9.975% QST. As of October 2026 the Growth plan at $1,999 a month comes to $2,298.35 with both taxes.

Do you write the French content yourselves?

We plan the content and work with qualified French-language writers and translators, and your team reviews technical terms before anything is published.
